5 Things to Consider Before Buying a New Lock

Door locks directly influence the level of security your entryways offer. Different types of locks perform various functions, but they all ascribe to one underlying theme, which is securing your property. With so many options available in the market today, it is imperative that you know how to select the right door lock to suit your particular need. Here are some things to consider as you buy a lock.

1.    Where You Want to Use the Lock

The environment around where you want to use a door lock will influence the type you settle on. If you need to use a lock in an environment with a lot of moisture, for example, an electric keypad lock would not be the best option. A low-grade lock would be ill-advised in environments where metals easily corrode.

2.    The Function

Various lock types perform different functions. The task at hand will influence your choice. You can't use a deadbolt for a kitchen cabinet lock where a dummy door knob would do. Conversely, you can't use the same dummy door knob on your front or back door where security is critical.

3.    The Security Grade

Door locks are categorised into several grades depending on the level of security they provide. The Australian Standard AS 4145.4, for example, will help you assess the strength and resilience of different padlocks. Such standards help you identify the resistance to corrosion, the degree of strength, etc. that a particular lock might have. Consult locksmiths when researching on what security standard for a door lock would be most suitable for you.

4.    Remote Programming

If you decide to go the smart lock way you need to consider whether you can remotely program a particular lock for ease of use. A smart lock that allows you to use it with a companion app, for example, enables you to operate the lock even when you are away from the premises. You can let someone in and out without requiring physical proximity, which saves you time.

5.    Temporary Guest Code Feature

Another smart lock feature to consider is the capability to create temporary codes for guests. When you have guests over you, don't have to give away your main code. You can create short-term codes for them that expire after a certain period.

Conclusion

You must always ensure that you use the right lock for the right task so as not to compromise on security. If unsure of what is best, consult a locksmith.
